Oh Lindsey! I really loved this! Somehow I’ve yet to read Braiding Sweetgrass and you just made it jump up to the top of the list. This made me think a lot about scarcity and abundance mindsets and a quote from a book I’m currently reading, “when you make a difference with what you already have it expands”. I also LOVE your act of getting out of the car. What a small but powerful shift. I’m definitely stealing that!
I love this book and this reflection. "Reciprocity" was my word of the year for 2022 — in relationships with others, in relationship with the earth, in relationship to myself. 🩷
I loved reading this -- just what I needed this week, thank you! Could reciprocity be in the air right now, waiting to be fully invigorated? I hope so.
Our lilacs are only just starting to open up, so the smell was fresh with me when I looked at your photo of blossoms. I bet the syrup will be wonderful, and your child made me want to give hugs all around. 🧡
I made dandelion jelly once. It was a fun (if somewhat tedious) process that wasn't really worthwhile because the result tasted pretty much exactly like mild honey, but I enjoyed doing it! Yay dandelions!
Very sorry to hear the sickness came ‘round to you! This essay bares zero trace of post-viral fatigue though. It is crystalline and so full of heart. I needed this reminder about reciprocity; I think it’ll take a long time before that perspective uproots the one I was raised within but I hope it will. I adore Kimmerer’s book too (no surprise) and got to see her speak in person back in October + meet her in the book signing line. Meeting people you respect can be a let down, but she did not disappoint. I was on the verge of tears.
Sorry you and your family have been sick, Lindsey. Hope you recover quickly. Thanks for another great book recommendation--I can’t keep up, but it’s a great problem. When walking in the forest I love contemplating symbiosis--that every atom in my body came from the earth, including all the water and minerals, that all the plants give us oxygen and many give us food, that as I walk I give them the gift of my breath that sustains them too. We are in a constant love dance with all living things, the water, and the earth, all of us sustaining each other; we can never be separate because we are all connected by the simple acts of living and breathing. It’s so beautiful!! (Your posts are so good I shared the link with a friend.)

Thank you, thank you 🩷 and yes, may it be so!
The syrup was fun in some seltzer water today and I thought of your post when I let a few stray dandelions stay put in my garden. 😂

Yes, that’s beautiful! Even just the act of breathing with the trees is reciprocity.
I love that book. ❤️ (hope you feel rested soon!)
