Love this theme of life as a series of games and play. My very wise yoga teacher once told me, "the opposite of perfection isn't imperfection, it's play." I try to bear that in mind when life feels burdensome.
Lindsey, I love what you're writing! Also I feel like we're very much on the same wavelength and some of the themes you're hitting here, I'm hitting tomorrow in my own newsletter, and not because I copied you! Guess there's just something in the ... Ohio air??? But anyway, I basically want to go through and give claps to all your sentences, because you're just spot on, and you say it all in such a lovely way ❤️
Just went through and explored a bunch of the Conspirituality episodes and finally find the right one to download. So many of them look soooo interesting!!
I love the synergy I feel with other writers here. I can’t wait to read what you post 💜
I am taking a small break from the podcast (maybe after the Brad onishi ones on “secular person of faith”!!) because my nervous system is on overdrive recently and I think it’s just the muscle memory of all the craziness that has happened this time of year over the last 8 or so years. I can’t really handle the conspiracy theory stuff, or even DLs antizionism stuff - even though I really want to!!!! Gotta take care of the ole brain.
I feel that too with the nervous system, though actually for me it's been more semi-sub-conscious til you just said that. But (Five speaking here) I would like to learn more about how conspiracy followers fall into those things, from a more intellectual standpoint -- like circling the topic with my mind without falling into getting totally triggered!
Kandi this was EXACTLY the sentence that jumped out to me also! So good!
And Lindsey - this is such a brilliant reminder to engage in the silliness of life! My partner and I cut through almost everything with laughter, and it is truly some of the best magick one can do. 💜
That line came almost verbatim from the podcast - I think you would find it very interesting. Also the most recent episode with Bradley Onishi on “secular person of faith” was really really good!
I too loved this insight: "Bad games trap you in a single, pervasive value system and freeze you. But good games are playful, broad, and light." That's the problem with high control anything and the solution in two short sentences. Thanks, Lindsey.
I have to tell you, my reading of this piece got totally derailed by your stunning image of the tree. Painful nostalgia for the deep connection to place that I felt in Alaska (where I was born and lived until I was 33) has been cresting with frequency over the past few months, I think calling me to process a grief I haven’t even learned to name. It’s so deep and multifaceted. I left Alaska because I thought my future was ‘out there’ because I thought my future was with the church, because my soon to be husband had started a business in Utah--i barely thought it over. I just left, and now going back would require an impossible unraveling. But if I somehow found myself single and childless, Alaska is just where I’d be. Like, I wouldn’t even have to gather the momentum for the decision. I would just be there. Somehow, seeing that tree, the pain just broke loose and is requiring my full attention.
But pursuing playfulness is exactly where I’m at. Like Christine said, there’s an uncanny synergy. I’m just too blinded by grief at the moment yo process the rest of your piece 😂😭
Im glad you’re making space for the grief. That is a lot to hold. I’m sending you a hug and good wishes for finding a tree friend where you are in the meantime. ❤️🩹
Oh, I have so many thoughts! Most importantly first: I love your favorite tree. They’re beautiful. Thank you for sharing them and the wonderful birdsong. Second, that Rosie Sprinks quote hit me like a ton of bricks. And the Freya Rohn quote—precisely right. This is just the right dose of another perspective I needed right now. Going to be mulling over this all day.
They are just magnificent. I try to visit seasonally and I was blown away by how many bird pairs were in the branches that day. It was a dreary and misty day but the air was just full of birdsong. 🩷🩷 thanks as always for reading & sharing.
I am so glad that episode resonated! I’ve listened to it an embarrassing number of times and YES to those last few minutes (I also enjoy Nguyen’s humor, especially when he asks them if they can just real quick tell everyone why people fall for shitty ideas). There’s also a short book called “Finite and Infinite Games” that lands in a similar place: there is only one infinite game.
I love the questions you’re taking from this. I am going to shamelessly steal them. 😊 What a great way to start the new year. 💗

I love that quote! God bless wise yoga teachers 💜

Yes! So much synergy and I love it too.

Yes! If only church got the memo.
Also loved this: “instead of juggling golden coins the person in charge hands you a large boulder and explains ‘God says to carry this.’” ❤️🩹❤️🩹

I’ll definitely check it out. Have a lovely Saturday.

That was an almost direct quote from the podcast I was recommended. It resonated with so many people so I’m happy I chose to share it!

“even when life is unpredictable, our jester friend maintains balance with his playfulness and attention…” 🫶🏽🌈 forever and ever amen

Ooh I will look up that book. And yes, he had a great sense of humor - let’s just solve this problem right now. 😆
And I stole at least two of the questions so go right ahead. Chris la trey is just perpetually inspiring me to slow down and care more.
We could all use that inspiration. 🧡
Wow, love these observations! Your insights are always invigorating.
❤️❤️❤️
